SOCIAL DESIGN
1070 UNSEEN
a social design project in cooperation with Caritas as part of the Stadtarbeit project at Vienna Design Week 2018
Pinned to the heels of a home assistant, the project team collected unheard and very personal stories along familiar paths of the focus district Neubau. Recordings from these visits merged into a collage of sound documents, inviting outsiders to immerse themselves in the hidden nooks of the district: wartime memories, recommendations for the future, anecdotes from everyday life - the unnoticed voices of the city have much to tell.To all those interested in reaching out, a postbox next to the installation offers a possibility to get in touch with the storytellers. The designers personally deliver the postcards.
What is the value of neighbourship in urban communities? What role do caring professions play in times of anonymization and digitalization? How can we acknowledge the needs of an aging population in our plans for urban futures? The project offers an impulse to fuel the discussion about new forms of interaction within a community.

"The project manages to convey the work of Caritas home help, the life situation of people in need of care and life behind the facades of the 7th district with an approach that is as empathetic as it is concentrated. The people become tangible, their stories can be experienced, closeness is created without showing off or overstepping boundaries. The team approached the people involved authentically, respectfully and with great appreciation. The choice of creative means is supportive, the comprehensibility of the home helpers' presence at a certain point in time is touching, the set pieces that represent stories are just as cleverly chosen as the audio material."
